Last week I illustrated spiritual formation in terms of a journey that looks more like a sailboat voyage than a plane, train, or automobile excursion. Spiritual formation rarely (if ever) looks like moving from point “A” to point “B” by the shortest possible route. There will be set backs, wind will increase or decrease, various weather conditions will develop, and changes in wind direction that will require adjustments, some minor and some major. The journey will not be predictable or as easy as reading a “Three Easy Steps To Spiritual Maturity” article. It will require effort and a keen awareness of the Holy Spirit with a serious engagement of the Holy Scriptures. »»
Before reading any further, you should know that I have never sailed a boat. I have talked with people who have sailed boats. I have seen it done on television. I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, and regardless of what the commercial says, I am far from being an expert on sailing. Nevertheless, from what little I know about sailing, I want to attempt a metaphor for spiritual formation that I hope will give you insight into your own spiritual journey. »»
Typically, I leave our house and head toward the church office with several things on my mind. Often I’m thinking about a counsel appointment scheduled for the morning. Sometimes I’m working an illustration through my head for an upcoming sermon. Other times I’m debating which coffee shop I want to grab a latte from to start my day. Anyway, I wander through my neighborhood and make my way out to the main road, I turn west, and then it happens . . . »»
