The Bible itself makes it very clear that it is no ordinary work of literature. It is more than a story, more than a collection of poetry, more than simply a window into an age long past. The Bible explicitly declares itself to be nothing less than the very words of the living God. It says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that all God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, TNIV)
Philip Jakob Spener a sixteenth century leader in the church once said, “The more at home the Word of God is among us, the more we shall bring about faith and its fruits.” This is by no means an original thought for the Psalmist himself declares, “Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart -- they do no wrong but follow in his ways.” (Psalm 119:2-3, TNIV)
The thing that we all must realize is that the God of the Universe has created us for a relationship with him and until we engage him we will not have that relationship that he so seriously desires. Why must we meditate on God’s Word? Because God is speaking to us, but not just to us but to you. God wants to speak into your life, into your situation, into your problems and fears and desires. But he will be unable to do so as long as we continue to neglect his love letter to us.
So here are a few reasons why we must meditate on God’s Word:
- God reveals himself to us through his Word.
- Neglecting the Bible robs us of our understanding of our God-given mission and purpose as followers of Jesus.
- Failing to do so we risk the lives of not only ourselves but our children and future generations (see Deuteronomy chapter 6).
- It is a treasure given to us from the very hands of God. Its value is immeasurable and its riches inexhaustible.
So why must we meditate on God's Word? Because that is exactly what it is. The truth is God has spoken. The question for you and I is, "What has God said?"
