The tiny workshop in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains housed many intricately carved wooden figures. They had been created over the years by a medical doctor and were amazingly realistic and showed great craftsmanship. Before he died the doctor had specified that the figures were to be available for viewing by the general public without charge. The heirs, however, had devised a clever way of circumventing his wishes by narrowing the exit and erecting a sign: Donation $5 dollars each. Even though the exhibit was well worth the price, I’m sure that I wasn’t the only one who resented such duplicity.
Secular and religious organizations have used this same ruse for many years. “For a small donation of only 25 dollars we’ll send you a pen used by pastor Goodenough.” Such blatant subterfuge completely violates the true meaning of donation—a heart-felt, voluntary gift or contribution.
God’s chosen people, The Israelites, were commanded to give tithes of different sorts (Lev 27:30-32) (Nu 18:26-32) not only of monetary means but also of flocks and grains. However, there was no unexpected trickery, they knew in advance the amount (usually 10%) expected. Several cults demand that their adherents sell everything they own and “donate” it to the cause.
New Testament Christians are taught to give generously (Mt 10:8) (Lk 6:38) and it will be given back to use in like manner (Rom 12:8). Our contribution is to be a true donation determined by our heart, not a prescribed amount (2 Cor 9:6-8). It is not hard to give cheerfully without compulsion when one understands what God has already donated to us (Jo 3:16) and will give to those who love, honor, serve and obey Him (1 Cor 2:9).
