Recently another perceptive article by our prolific brother in Christ, Don Campbell, entitled, “LOVING GOD FROM CENTER TO CIRCUMFERENCE” started me thinking of all things core. So many physical things like the earth, an apple, bone marrow and a computer have this central innermost essential part. Anyone interested in building physical stamina realizes that it involves strengthening one’s inner body core. A couple contemplating marriage should discuss the core values that they share. What are their internal beliefs that dictate how life should be lived? As we learn more and more about the production of blood cells in the marrow of bones, we can better understand the verses that say, “For the life of a creature is in the blood…” (Lev 17:11) and “…the blood is the life…” (Dt 12:23).
The spiritual core of a person might be called, “your inner being…” (Eph 3:16-17). It is also often referred to as the heart (v17) and the self. This core must contain emotions, free will, and a conscience because it can be disciplined (2 Tim 1:7) and controlled (1 Th 5:8) (Tit 2:12) (1 Pe 5:8). When this core is called the heart, it can store up either good things or evil things (Lk 6: 45). When this information moves to the exterior, it can produce both good and evil words and actions (Mt 12:34-35) (Mt 15:19-20).
Unfortunately, it is much easier to clean the floor than it is the core. “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be” (Jas 2:10). Paul adds these words, “…For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” (Rom 7:18) Thankfully in the next chapter he brings great news, “You however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the (Holy) Spirit if the Spirit of God lives in you…” (Rom 8:9). The Holy Spirit is the quintessential core doctor. He testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children, (Rom 8:16) He leads us, (v14) He helps us in our weaknesses, (v26) He helps us pray and intercedes for us (v26-27). He empowers us (Eph 3:16). Talk about house calls!
